Extremely rare and important triple candelabrum. About 10 1/2 inches high and 6 inches wide. Early circa 1911 design, possibly by Karl Kipp, shows Viennese influence. Design highlights include severe geometric form, circular woodgrain hammering on the base and an inset jade stone.
I believe these are the only two examples known.
Value: The bottom one sold at David Rago's March 2008 auction for $141,600 including buyer's premium. That is the only auction record for this form.
Top one is collection of David and Debbie Rudd, Daltons American Decorative Arts |

Extremely rare, spectacular and important five cup candelabrum (compare the design to the piece above as well as the Princess sticks below). Signed with E.A. Fuchs' mark as shown. Circa 1911. About 10 1/2 inches high and 9 inches wide.
Although these Viennese design elements are typically associated with Kipp because he produced the similar Princess candlesticks at his Tookay Shop, the obscure Fuchs may have had much more to do with these features than is currently recognized. In fact, the Kipp attribution to Princess sticks and related designs may need to be reconsidered based on pieces like this one. According to the Roycroft Arts Museum, there is one more of these known.

Very rare candlestick with cylindrical shafts and applied silver squares. Based on the original advertisements, this was made in 1911. About 8 inches high. A great Vienna Secession-influenced design probably by Karl Kipp or Dard Hunter. Click here for a closeup of the bottom. Original brown finish in very good condition.

Value: about $5000. Auction results: $4,806 ebay 2/00; $4750 + premium Treadway 12/04. |

These are called "Princess" candlesticks and the design was probably made first at Karl Kipp's Tookay shop (circa 1912-1915) and then carried over to the Roycroft Copper Shop. It is often said that Kipp designed these, but that may not necessarily be the case.
This is the Karl Kipp version, signed with the double K mark. There are several subtle differences between the earlier Kipp and later Roycroft versions (check the pics for a comparison). The KK's are slightly taller, have a more gently flared and fully hammered bobeche, rounded edges on the bottom, and overall much higher quality and more graceful handmade construction. KK Princess sticks are much more desirable (and rarer) than Roycroft princess sticks.

Large pic of comparison with a Roycroft stick . Note this Roycroft stick is "middle period". There are early marked Roycroft princess sticks where the tops are just like Kipp sticks, but they're rare.

These are Roycroft's Princess candlesticks (in brass finish). About 6.75 inches high. Know that there are variations of the base design on these sticks -- a "straight pyramid" base and a later "flange" base. Be careful if you're trying to put a pair together, as bases (and other parts) will differ from one stick to another.

Rare Karl Kipp candlesticks. About 7 inches high, signed KK. These are an unusual variation on the Princess stick design made only at Kipp's Tookay Shop (no Roycroft equivalent). It's interesting that these are not pictured in either of the 2 known Kipp catalogs. Original caramel brown finish in excellent condition (would you clean off all the old wax and dirt, aka patina.....? :-).

Value: $2,000+ per pair. A single sold on ebay for $1,325 10/03; and another single sold on ebay 3/04 for $1,490, a pair in excellent condition sold on ebay for $3,260 2/07. |

More rare Karl Kipp candlesticks. About 6.5 inches high, signed KK. These are also unique to Kipp (no Roycroft equivalent).
An interesting comparison can be made between the design of these sticks and the Seccessionist stick with silver squares pictured up above. Note how Kipp replaced the four thin supports with a single column and eliminated the German silver squares, but otherwise the designs are quite similar. Original caramel brown finish in excellent condition.

Tulip Candlesticks. About 14 inches high.
These were pictured in 1912 Roycroft copper ads as "Tulip Tapers".
This is a rare, early, and very successful form, particularly delicate and graceful, while also quite sophisticated. I've only seen three or four sets for sale over the past 12 years.
Original Aurora Brown finish on these is slighly cleaned. Click here for a big big.
Value: these are always expensive when they show up - $2,000-3,000+ per pair. I paid $2000 at auction for this pair in June 2004. |
|
Extremely rare circa 1916 candlesticks with three thin graceful legs on cupped bases. About 8 3/4 inches high.
These appeared in an advertisement in The Fra in March 1916, which is odd because the design is much more 1911-12-ish. So they're a bit of an oddity in that respect.
Value: I am only aware of 2 pairs of these, and one single, ever selling at auction. The pair at top sold at Rago's in 1995 for $4200 plus premium (big pic). The pair at bottom also sold at Rago's 03/06 for $6,000 + premium (big pic). The single sold on ebay 9/08 for $1,753.

Very rare and huge strapwork candlesticks. About 15 inches high, these date to the mid 1920's. Note the design similarities to the lamp bases with Steuben shades that date to the same period. These cost 25 bucks a pair in 1925, compared to 15 bucks for a pair of the 12 inch sticks pictured above.

Value: est $5,000+. They almost never show up at auction so there's not much of a price history.. |

Tall candlesticks with cylindrical shafts. About 9.5 inches high. Same as above but with a "Sheffield" silver finish in excellent condition. As an aside, my understanding is that Roycroft Sheffield pieces are not technically "Sheffield" as the term is used in the silver world. Rather, they are silver plated.
Value $400-500 per pair. Latest auction prices: I paid $425 for a pair 8/03; $420 ebay 9/03. PS: Like most Sheffield pieces, I think these are currently undervalued. |

Unusual low candlesticks with straps and rivets. Bases are 3 inches square. These are the strangest little things. I've seen this pair and a single on ebay. But I can't find them listed in any catalogues. They're signed with the middle mark and the copper is only medium weight so I know they were made later. The base is similar to a Princess candlestick base and all the straps and rivets make them sort of interesting.
Click here for a closeup of one.
The finish is worn original with some crud.
Value $400-ish per pair. |

Rare and valuable Karl Kipp/Roycroft sconces. About 12 inches tall. The only pair I've seen, but they are listed in Kipp's 1914 catalogue. Note that they are marked KK along with a superimposed Roycroft stamp. This probably indicates they were made at the Tookay shop, but sold by Roycroft after Kipp's return in 1915.

Some deformations to the holders, but nevertheless they sold for a whopping $2,650 3/02 ebay. |

Rare early large rectangular sconce. About 10 inches tall. Note that the candleholder portion is the same design used on the tulip sticks circa 1912.

Karl Kipp/Roycroft sconces. 10 inches tall. For whatever reason, these frequently show up unsigned (like this pair), but they're listed in the 1914 Kipp catalog. Original brown finish in fair condition.

Early large sconces. About 13 inches high.
Cleaned finish. These don't show up very often, especially not pairs.
Value: This pair sold for $750 eBay 11/01, even with the cleaning. An excellent pair with a brown finish sold for $1000 December 2005 ebay. |
|
Hooded sconces. About 10 inches high.
These show up less often than the slightly smaller basic arrowhead sconces above. But I think the hoods detract somewhat from an otherwise nice clean form (and they also tend to get bent up). Not sure about condition on this particular pair other than what the picture shows.
Value: This pair sold for $250 eBay 10/01, which seems like a steal. |

Pair of late unhammered copper and brass sticks. These sticks reveal a shift in Roycroft's later production to Art Deco inspired designs. Original finish in very good condition.
Value $250-400. Latest auction prices: $405 9/00 ebay; $660 acid etched 8/01 ebay (too much!!); the pair pictured at bottom left sold for $178 11/02 ebay. |
|
Pair of late barely-hammered sconces. In my opinion they're more deco than arts and crafts, and are not one of Roycroft's better efforts. Note that the minimal hammering is unsophisticated at best. If you haven't guessed, I don't like these very much, and personally I wouldn't buy them.
Value $200-300. |

Pair of double candelabras. About 9.5 inches by 3 inches. Original Silver finish in, believe it or not, excellent condition (these haven't been polished in a while). Who says Arts and Crafts stuff won't work in a traditional room? These look great on a Queen Anne dining table.
