Bookends with poppy decoration. Poppy bookends represent one of Roycroft's better designs, and although they show up on a regular basis, they tend to be expensive relative to most other bookends. Good original Aurora Brown finish.

Early bookends with tooled gnarled tree design. Described in 1912 advertisements as the "Old willow stump design", these were apparently only made for a short period of time and are therefore very rare today.

Value: no recent auction results.

Rare and early bookends with tooled landscape scenes. About 6 inches tall. Excellent condition.

Rare Karl Kipp signed bookends with Secessionist geometric decoration. 4 by 4 inches. Excellent condition. Awesome period design.

Value: Sold ebay 3/02 for $710. The only pair I've seen sell.

AWESOME and rare Italian polychrome bookends with intricate tooled decoration. About 7" by 4". These are just about as nice a pair of production Roycroft bookends as you'll ever find. The only ones that rival these in rarity are those with cutouts or tooled landscape scenes.

The Italian polychrome line is characterized by the unique caramel copper color and green highlights, and the design has been attributed to Walter Jennings (Karl Kipp's first assistant). The workmanship on these just doesn't get much better.

Value This pair sold ebay 6/00 for $835, and another pair is unlikely to show up for a long long time.

Another rare Italian polychrome bookend with tooled decoration. About 4 inches high. There are only three IP bookends listed in the 1919 catalogue. This is the third design, model number 325, the ones above are number 319, and the ones below are model 324.

Click here for a close-up of the workmanship, and here for a large pic of a pair.

Value: This single bookend sold on ebay around 2002 for $220. A pair sold for $1552 Dec 2005. The first pair I'd ever seen for sale (doesnt mean the next one is "worth" that though).

Super rare Italian polychrome bookends with intricate tooled decoration. About 6.5 inches by 4 inches. You can't help but notice that the big K's in the design hint at Karl Kipp's initials.

Value $800+. Latest auction prices: $886 ex. cond. 10/02 ebay.

Rare signed Walter Jennings bookends with tooled designs. About 7" by 3.75". Like most Jennings pieces, the workmanship on these is incredible, and as far as I know there is no Roycroft equivalent. Each bookend is decorated with a strong Arts and Crafts design consisting of seven stylized 4-petal flowers surrounded by a tooled line border. The brown finish is original. One bookend is signed with a mark used by Jennings on work done at home, and it's also dated 1921.

Value: too rare to value.

Another pair of rare signed Walter Jennings bookends with tooled designs. About 6" by 3.5". Each bookend is decorated with a repeating design of conventionalized square flowers and panels. Signed with WJ's circle and three slashes mark used on work done at home. Probably cleaned at some point.

Rare bookends with tooled designs, maybe by Walter Jennings, or maybe another Roycrofter, but unsigned. About 5" by 4". Compare the design of the decoration on these to the various cylinder vases on the Vases I page -- any guesses on who made these? Nice original medium brown finish.

Value: no auction record.

Rare signed Walter Jennings bookends with tooled designs. No Roycroft equivalent to these either. Each bookend is decorated with a curved diamond flower. Excellent original brown finish. Both signed with WJ's circle and slash mark.

Value: hard to value.

Ultra rare and amazing Karl Kipp bookends with tooled designs and cutouts. About 4 inches high (they're pretty small) with awesome design and workmanship. To me the design of these bookends is more British Art Nouveau/Arts and Crafts than the typical Kipp-Roycroft work. One can only image that Kipp (or Jennings) was leafing through a European design periodical, spied something by Mackintosh or another Glasgow designer, and cranked out this pair of bookends. Regardless of the inspiration, they are an awesome example of American Arts and Crafts design and craftsmanship, and I think they are simply spectacular. Both signed with the Hand Wrought Karl Kipp mark.

Bookends. About 5 inches high. Some greenish polychrome around the design. Perfect Aurora Brown finish.

Value $200-300.

Bookends. Same as the ones above, but I've included these because thay have a finish that Roycroft called "blue brass". It's always been a mystery to me what this finish is all about, since it doesn't look that great. Condition of these is good.

Value $100-125.

A very similar pair but signed Karl Kipp sold a few days later on ebay for $474. The Kipp mark almost doubled the price! Of course, the Kipp ones are rarer, and worth the extra dough. A close up of one of these can be seen here. Note the difference in color and tooling details.
